Early ones definitely seem much better. To me the tune got to be a throw away in the '80s where they just raced through it to close the set.

Bobby's straining to hit all those high notes "Lord I SAW a mighty sign" "Thought he'd CALL it planet earth" is too much for me.... and then to top it off he had to do the blood-curdling WAAAAAAAAAHHHH to add to the crescendo at the end. Exhausting to listen to, without giving any satisfaction. I always thought this tune was an awkward fit for the band, an attempt to deliver straight up rock. However, it didn't seem to play to Jerry's strengths very well. Oh well, for all the pure goodness the band delivered, this is hardly anything to complain about.

For Saturday night songs, I'd personally take Elton's tune over this one :-)
